Carolinas Deanery Team Works With FOCUS Appalachia

June 18, 2013

During the week of June 9th, clergy and faithful of the Carolinas Deanery worked with FOCUS North America’s Appalachia Program in Spruce Pine, NC.  Lead by Ms. Larissa Hatch, Program Coordinator, the group worked to repair porches, carports, damaged basements, and improved the facilities of a local food bank.  One of the best aspects of the trip was being able to meet and know the people we were serving.

The group was comprised of men and women ages 15 to 50 with various levels of construction ability.  Members of the group found the experience humbling, rewarding, and formative.  For more information on the program, or ways to get involved, please see the information available from FOCUS North America.

New Novice at St Tikhon's Monastery from the DOS

June 18, 2013

This past week, at the Vigil of Holy Ascension at the OCA's flagship monastery, St. Tikhon's in South Canaan, PA, St. Athanasius parishioner Billy Nicholas Little became a novice of the monastery.  Brother Nicholas, who had been an active member of St. Athanasius since his Baptism almost four years ago, had spent much of these part four years corresponding with different monasteries and making select visits with the blessing of the rector of the parish, Fr. Justin Patterson.  The culmination of this careful process was Brother Nicholas' decision to enter St. Tikhon's Monastery.  Brother Nicholas has been residing as a worker at the monastery since the beginning of Great Lent and entrusts his future to the care of Abbot Sergius and the Brotherhood of St. Tikhon's.  The parishioners of St. Athanasius wish Brother Nicholas many years and look forward to developing deeper ties with St. Tikhon's through his being a monastic there!
